VIN # Location

You won't find one on the body .The serial number is stamped on the frame rail on the left side close to the steering box.

Also, if the transmission is original, it will have the serial number of the car on it at the top of the case, next to the bell housing. Refer to Mac VanPelts book on transmissions to get the lowdown.

Be very careful when you attempt to clean the left frame rail to find the VIN.. In many cases the numbers were very lightly stamped into the steel, to aggressive cleaning off of the rust scale, paints, etc., may result in the numbers being removed..
The correct number should start with a.... "star" 1800000 "star"... if the engine was originally a V8, can't remember the starting number for a 4 cylinder...
The VIN is also stamped into the frame on the left rear of the frame rail, usually on the axle hump..

On the B the original number is on the casting between actual trans case and engine...on a pad right above the starter location. Frame number was copied from this at assembly, and is likely near the firewall on left rail. I would strip the suspect area with paint remover rather than abrasive, then if number is crust and rusty attack that with Evaporust or one of its equivalents, which will not remove any metal like abrasives or acids. Since this is a level surface you can build a little dam around number with modeling clay or plumber's putty and fillitup with the rust remover.
B number will be like *B5,xxx,xxx*
