Vin # for '29 Tudor

Can anyone tell me where to find the frame Vin # on my '29 Model A Tudor ? I need it for an inspection required for out-of-state title transfer. What a pain !!

Thanks

It's on the top of the driver's side frame rail, just about under the door. You have to raise or remove the body to see it. I would think that MO has figured out an alternative to this by now. If you can find and contact Jim Spawn, the editor of The Restorer and who lives in MO, he might be able to advise you on how to best register your car. Others in the hobby in MO should also know; find a local Model A club.

Thanks for the reply RPM -

Called a couple people in the local clubs (Springfield Mo.) and they had no good ideas. Called Mo. DMV and they offered no advice but to pull the body and request that a Mo. State Highway patrolman come to my garage and varify the number. No exceptions and no waivers from Mo. DMV.

They sure make it hard for a guy to buy an out-of-state car.

Advise for the future - this something to consider when buying an out-of-state car when you live in Missouri. Is that why they call it the "Show Me" state?

When I brought my car in from California I just had to have the local sheriff's deputy come out and verify that the engine number matched the California title. Once he signed the form - see below - I was able to get the new MO title and plates without any problem.

The Missouri DMV has a form here....http://dor.mo.gov/forms/5062.pdf

If the car you are buying has an engine with the same vin number as on the out of state title this should be all you need. Once the local law enforcement officer has verified that the engine number matches the title and signs the form you should be clear to get the new title.

If the car you are buying does not have an engine or if the engine number in the car doesn't match the title then you're gonna have to lift the body to get to the vin number on the frame. Then you have to hope it's legible and matches what the out of state title says.
Isn't this fun?
Good Luck!

Bob - Thanks for the reply.

The engine # is not present. Either it has been removed or it didn't have one. Further, the two inspection stations that I went to, both said they would accept a body or frame # only. So that still leaves me with the chore of lifting the body for inspection and either taking it disassembled to the inspection station or having a police officer come to my garage.

Hmmmmmm...A body number you say? Use the assembly plant body codes and numbers on the Tudor subframe crossmember. That way you won't have to lift the body off.

See my website on just how to find it...Go to Additional Studies, then go to Letters, Numbers and Codes.

I knew a guy here in Arizona that was faced with the same problem. Can't remember his name right off :D but he went to a trophy store and had a small brass plate made with the same number that showed on the out-of-state title. He scuffed up the plate and rubbed some oil and dirt on it and JB Welded it to the frame under the floor board. The license clerk at the ADOT counter came out to look at the car, and after he raised the floor board and gave her a flashlight to take a look, it passed!

Please tell me that none of you work for ADOT.

I saw this on the swap site a few days ago.
If you know your coupe is "legal" you may consider something like this for temporary convenience until such a time your body is pulled. Still there's nothing better for piece of mind than knowing for sure what you have. What the heck, Just bite the bullet and have an intimate relation with your new toy and invest a day and lift the body. (easy for me to say, right?)

Year ago someone took a briggs tag and stamped the title number on it. The tag, using rivits was placed on the firewall where it is originaly install.
