Say i started cleaning the old paint and tarnish off a Victor sidelight it is square with a triple tier top. What I am noticing is this thing looks to be more copper than brass in color, is this common or ??? Also I stripped the old finish off an eagle for mounting under a moto-meter and the same thing. Thanks

When the brass has a copper look to it after polishing. This is caused by the leaching out of the zink from the brass alloy. This occurs due to long term storage in some inviroment that causes the leaching. Try sanding the bad areas with 400 and then buff it again .The brass most likly will be OK under the affected surfass.

Some times these brass lamps did get nickle plated. If not the zink as suggested above could be the undercoating for the nickle.
