Very early transmission

Does anybody have a pic of a very early trans case from the back. I know that the front looks like a std. multi disc. I'm looking for the reverse idle hole...is it LARGER? What does the retaining bar look like? I think there are 2 cases for the early 28. Thanks, Dudley

No picture, But yes it is much larger & so is the bar (thicker) that holds it in place..

There were probably four changes to the back of the multi-disc transmission case before ending with what is probably the most common. Some of these changes affected the reverse idler shaft and others affected both the shaft and the case. The earliest had a larger diameter end on the outside which had a corresponding larger hole in the case and a larger boss on the back end. The shaft had an "oiler" at one end and was drilled and cross drilled to get lube to the gear bearing. Next, I believe was a shaft that had the "oiler" but was the same diameter over its length and the case still had the larger boss on the back but the conventional hole. Next came a shaft that eliminated the "oiler" but had provision for a thicker bar to prevent the shafts from coming out. This probably started out with the larger cast boss on the back end which was reduced on later units to what is more common on the later cases. Last came the shaft with the provision for the thinner bar to prevent the shafts from coming out.

I have one I will run out to the shop and get a pic. It is just a bare case at the moment, but I do have the bushing and shaft. Rod

Here are some pic's. Hope they help. Rod

DJ, If you find an early cae, be aware these are very tempermental to rebuild. Using any wrong or worn part on the reverse idler will lock them up as well as using the repop cluster gear shaft or the later shaft retainer. Been through a couple of them and both tried my patience til everything was correct. Rod

Rod... Thanks for the photos, got me going in the right direction!

Jim... Plum forgot about your sight, it would have saved everybody a lot of time!

Thanks to all, Dudley
