I checking out valves to my Merc 41 block with a 425 E cam and a 8AB lifter ( 44 grams )
My idea is has a light valve.
This block has a nice ported runners done way in the past by a pro porter, from what I heard it was done in LA and the guy I bought it from had it for ca 30 years.
But it has the std 1.5” seats and I will keep it at 1.5”, and not go 1.6”.
I will make own new 1 piece guides in bronze and 8 mm or 5/16” stem.
I has Iskys springs and I did like to talk to the man last year when I was in LA but Mr Isky had just went home.
Ides of question is those springs is made for his .400 cam and not the .425, so it get maybe a higher pressuare.

Titanium sounds way out maybe… well I has a buddy that can get me a longer 2” used sets for free but I need cut them and make grooves and set them at the diameter 1.5” and from what I heard the CSB exhaust lenghts is 4.92” (?)
Actually titanium sets is not expensive ( used ) on eBay.
Good is super light or half weight from steel, and maybe in this aplication at ca 45 grams.

-But to make it more simple, what good flow, thin head 1.5” in stainess is to be used ?
Manleys, Ferrera, or Del West etc.

Will the std CSB lenghts ( 4.92” ) works.
I’m not there in mock-up yet to see the lenghts.
But I’m aware as I will not use adjustable lifters to cut lenghts on valve ( the old way )

My way of thinking is that increasing the spring tension is the same as adding weight to the entire valve assembly so you’re not gaining anything!

I has not been doing this engines before but if one use a heavy adjustable solid lifter and thick head valve say at 300 grams against say 100 it cant be bad for following the cam profile.
I dont think one can get much out of the springs ( if use the Isky 185-G ) so that was my question to Mr Isky what he thought, and the 185-G is at 2” 85 LBS.
As I 'might' heard on the 425 E cams Chucks idea was his nose top design would be gentle for springs.
I can’t say if less or more needed from installation pressure ( 85 ) or the compressed pressure.
But if one is use a 32 cam might be stiffer as a cast cam, but steel is strongewr and idea of rew is 6K.
So I dont whats needed on nose and installation, but I do think less moving weight helps, atleast some. This aplication if a stiffer spring might not can handle 100 or more anyway just cause the cam in pan..

As I build vintage ideas/parts it will not be a fat steel cam and .520 in lift on roller lifters and dual springs.
I will not ’dragrace’ this coupe but like the idea it can rew 6K.
Going light on moving parts was possible even way back and Zephyr springs and .400 cam was out on market.

-The old guys used this parts on salt or drags, is there any information what pressure they used and valves ?

I checked the lenghts of the valves.
I had a valve/guide from another engine ( std Ford ) and lengts of that valve was = 4.80".
I had the cam in block and did lathe small bearings in aluminium.
The cam is a cast Potvin 425 E based out of a 8AB
and basecircle of that cam is D= 0.8854".
I guess way smaller than a std Ford cam.
The lifter I like to use ( I did find a NOS set at 47 grams, guess std 8AB or? ) and height of that lifter is = 1.7445".
Se picture of how far that lifter is down in the lifter hole and against the base circle.

So I installed the valve and it had a gap of 0.1299".
Valve clearance should be on intake = 0.013".
So that get me a valve lengts at 4.9169".

I guess that is pretty equal from what a CSB is, and I will stay at 1.5" valves.

Now, I has not make new seats and I has no idea how the base circle will be on my 32 cam I plan to use and after it's been grinded to the 425 E profile.
So this is just ruff for a test to see where it all leads.

Has anyone ideas on this and if I go Manlys what does those valve weight ?

And as I plan make my own guides, I can go 8 mm stems aswell and not CSB std stems.
But I has not look what is out there.

Just a thought.
I has been running in NHRA stock eliminator Mopars since the late 80's and back then it was a idea that valvesprings killed HP.
I was using the green MP springs, and if memory was correct I was using around 130 on seat. Idea was go as loose and no floating valves.
Years went on and soon that debate went into use way stiffer springs and I was way over 200 on seats.
On my old Hemi I used a cast std journal cam and used ceramic lifters and had around 250 on seats. Those intake valves was ca 130 grams.
Now I has a 60 mm tool polished profile steel cam and intake valves at under 100 grams a Trend tool steel lifters PPC coated.
Springs conical and is at 300 LBS on seat.
I use syntetic 0-20 oil and it rews near 9.000.
I don't call it 'stock' now but this is how far all this went, and its a 60K project.

Idea now is it not matter on HP how stiff the springs is as each take the other one off.
But ideas change in racing as years go on.
