valve keepers gone

Did anyone ever have the keepers come off of a valve. My 8ba engine had a miss determined it wasn't ignition problem so we pulled the intake manifold. Discovered the keepers had disappeared from an exhaust valve. I guess they are in the pan it was #8 cylinder.
 
Sometimes the lower retainer of a rotator-type set is mistaken as the valve keeper. I bought an engine that was a mixed bag of early and later 8BA spring retainers. Looked weird but correct springs were used with proper retainers. Have yet to determine if proper valves were used though.
