Valve Installation Question

Valve spring shims are available in .015,.030 and .060 thickness.
The .060 shims are part number A202 (VSI) and work well on the Model A/B motors.
I use a sharpie to check the valve seats, you can put in on the valve and on the seat
also to see what your doing.

Patrick L --- Thanks for the information & numbers

Dodge --- Thanks for the part number. What is (VSI)? Will these shims work with V8 flathead springs I am going to run? They are same O.D. as the model A spring. They work out to 85# @ 2.00". Can you stack one or two shims as needed?

Yes shims will work with the V-8 springs, yes you can stack them and V.S.I. Is the company that makes them.

Dodge -- Thanks for the continued information, I had not used V.S.I. before. As I told Jim B, I am sure you guys will be glad when I finish this motor build and stop asking questions.

Not having a lathe to cut some spacers, does anyone know where I can get some 1.00" OD x .680" ID x .500" thick spacers that will work with V8 flathead valve springs?

Anyone have 8 new V8 flathead springs that they would part with for use in my A motor build? Don't really need a set of 16 for this first build.

Call Egge machine they'll sell you 8. Charlie Yapp, Secrets of speed used to sell spacers maybe he still has them.

We are in the process of dealing with valves that are not sealing all that well on a new overhaul. When regrinding the seats and valves, I remember seeing an article that talked about the seat surface angels being slightly different by a degree or two. Doing so will affect the contact surface area and yield a higher contact pressure. The theory being that this will assist with cutting through the inevitable carbon flake thus maintaining a better valve seal. Now that I need this information I can non locate that article. If anyone knows of this article, or has knowledge regarding this detail, I would appreciate a lead. Thanks in advance.

When I built my Fullrace Flathead in my Dragster I used Ed Iskenderians 404A Constant Acceleration Radius Lifter Camshaft.
Because of this and the Dual Springs I had to Shim about .200 if I remember correctly. I used the Wheel Lug Nut Washers. They are .100 thick and fit the Guides perfectly.

I know this can not be correct on spring bind and cam lift. what am I doing wrong?

I tested a Flathead V8 spring that has a seat pressure of 83# @ 2.00" installed height. When I compress the spring, coil bind is 1.70". With a .015" safety factor the max lift would be 2.00 - 1.70 - .015 = .285"

What is the pressure at 2.125. You shouldn't need much more the 60-65 lbs. unless
it's some sort of wild cam. What is the lift?

I seem to recall that the Isky Gray V8 springs are 85# at 2 1/8"
The stock V8 springs about 60# at 2"

Haven't had any luck with either of them so cannot offer much more.
sorry, J

The one degree difference between the valve and seat will allow high pressure in a small area to help the valve seal right away. The one degree difference will soon wear in so the full contact width will be achieved.
Here's a link to what I found on Google to show with pictures what you asked.

johnneilson - Tom Wesenberg --- Thanks for the information. My numbers may be off a little as I am using the tried & true drill press / bathroom scale setup.:D

ok, I understand the tried, don't believe the true part too much.

in any event, you may just be chasing values when the application may not require it. make sure to have at least .050 clearance to coil bind at full open.
