valve guides

is there a differance in valve guides for a 38/49 engine to a 8ba as the only ones i can find are listed for 8ba

Yes, the 8ba are solid and the valve stem diameter is larger, the pre 8ba are split into halves for the mushroom stem valves

Just about everybody uses 8BA guides and valves when rebuilding an earlier engine these days. It makes life a lot easier.

I never use the older 5/16" mushroom tipped valves and the split guides - the later setup is SO MUCH BETTER on valve stem life.

One tip is to try to find exhaust guides that do not have the sealing-ring groove in them. You don't need seals in the exhaust side anyway and having more material to transfer heat to the block from the valve is good for cooling the valve.

I usually buy my guides from Red's Headers, though I'm sure there are other sourcs for the "solid" guides.
