valve chamber question

I took my valve cover off to replace the gasket cause i have a leak. Iv'e never looked inside of there before. facing the engine looking into the valve chamber on the far right side against the wall of the timing gear area there is a hole about 1 1/2x1 1/2 that you can see the timing gear. is there supposed to be a hole going into the timing gear area? looks like it's supposed to be there except the bottom of the hole is jagged. Looked through my books but can't find any pictures of inside the valve chamber. I'll try to post a picture if I can figure it out. thanks

Yes it's suppose to be there from what I can understand from you description. Only reason why I answered this is because this summer I rebuilt a motor and seen this and kinda had the exact same question as you. Other will be able to tell you why and what it is for.

here is a picture. hope it comes out. thanks

Yes, it's normal. It is a dam that allows oil to build up in the oil galley and then spill over onto the timing gears.

Exact same description on my motor, jagged lower portion like they cut it out with a torch. Oil droobles over it to lube the timing gear. I originally thought someone did some hatchet job on it.

Peter, That is exactlly what i thought that someone took a hammer on the bottom and chipped it out as for the reason for my question. thanks all for your help. Hope everything looks ok from the picture, valves ,springs.etc

Ford changed the height of the Front Oil Dam sometime between Feb. 23, 1928 (A31313) when it was 1/4 inch above the top of the push rod boss and March 12, 1928 (A45396) when the dam was about 1/4 inch below the top of the push rod boss for which it remained through production.

Pluck

I've read that the dam is so all the oil does not go out of the galley when going down hill and the return tube to keep the oil from pooling when going up hill.
