i picked up a 39 trany at the swapmeet today for my A today i was planing on using the clings adapter kit they sell i was just wondering what else i would need to do this any help would be appreciated alot
thanks yr1929

If you have a "B" engine, the adapter will not fit. If the "B" engine has an "A" flywheel housing, it will fit as it will all stock A engines. You will need the E brake and brake and clutch adapters. Also will need the V8 "U" joint housing. Otherwise, this is a great set-up.

this is what the kit concists of
The V8 Transmission Adapter is manufactured on modern CNC equipment and with the superb quality Cling’s always produces.
The adapter kit consists of the following 5 components:
cast aluminum transmission adapter
clutch and brake pedal mount
throw out bearing shaft
emergency brake lever mount
wishbone mount

I would put all new bearings in the trans, and check all the gears carefully. There's a reason why that trans was sold, and it might not be just money.

Hey youngrodder1929, you are also going to need the cup and clam shell from a v-8 torque tube. Can be found and they are cheap. That is all you will need to do the swap.

You can put Cling's adapter behind a B engine but the B pan needs to have the "bell" cut off. The spot welds on the bell can be drilled out or ground off and the bell saved for future use, and looks better than cutting off with a torch. An alternative is to modify the A pan to fit the B rear main, the pan will need dimples put into it like the B pan has for rod clearance or if 12-point nuts are used on the rods this step may not be needed.

I put my 39 std trans behind my model B engine using a cast iron Ford script adapter that everybody refuses that exist. I have no idea what its for, even though i have my theories, i just found it in a barn and could tell by eye what it does. The easiest way for a model B engine is probably to use a model B trans with 39 dlx and up gears and trans top.

I have never heard of an adapter like that either, may have come off a 39-40 pickup with the tractor engine??? The problem with using the whole B set-up is it is more complicated, engine mounts, pedal assy., etc. B float-o-motors can be used but you still have the pedal problem. I did such a swap years ago in my wide-bed and it works fine, just more trouble.

Jim,

Which MDG / Cluster combination do you prefer for the Model A?

1. 16 28 (with the 2.8X first and 1.60 2nd) ?

or

2. 15 29 (with the 3.12 first and 1.70 2nd) ?

As I remember those ratios are close but do not quote me.

Thanks
