V8 Rear axles in Model A housings

Does anyone know if you can put V8 axles, ring and pinion and spider gears in a model a rear axle housing? I realize you would have to shorten and spline the model a driveshaft, but will the rest of the components bolt together?

I don't believe they do. The ring is too wide and would have to be machined to fit in the housing. The only reason I know this is because a fiend wanted to maintain his '32 housing but wanted gears from a V8, so he had the ring machined down. The '32 being basically a carry-over of a Model A axle housing.

The pinion is supported in the V8 banjo center sections by the center casting. Model A is not. This is not a bolt together project. Also axle lengths vary throughout the V8 Years.

this is a model a. The end of the pinion not attached to the drive shaft freely hangs in the rear. Nothing supporting it.

this is a V8 rear axle housing. The pinion is supported in the casting

I was thinking of putting in the whole V8 center section and using the model a bells and driveshaft tube.

I believe the bolt spacing is different with the Model A Bells and the V8 Bells where the bolt to the center housing. Center is bigger in V8s

Same reason why there isn't a single quickchange rear end for all the cars. There is a Model A quickchange, and a V8 quickchange.

I am wondering why you would want to do this?

Model A differentials are fairly hardy and unless you are putting a lot of torque thu them that usually will work just fine. I have been running a Model A Differential in my Hot Rod for over five years and it is just fine. I have a mildly warmed up 59 AB Engine and drive the crap out of it. When I built the car, I did install all good components including new axles.

If you are going to run an engine with a lot of torque and are going to really want to "get on it" all the time, you may want to consider a V-8 rear end modified with Model A type spring hangers and a shortened drive shaft and torque tube.

Just a thought

No you can,t Ring & pinnion are differant as stated above, Many other points, V8 housing is larger in dia, Etc Thats why we produce teo differant quickchanges, one for Model A & early V8 The other for 35 V8 onwards, late 32 Same as dia as V8 but sme width as Model A Derek from cool NZ
