v8 flywheel on model A

Using a V8 clutch and pressure plate along with lightening the flywheel is common. Are you sure you not mixing the two?

Can I use a v8 flywheel on a stock model A engine?

Yes.
There are some mods involved as Bob C noted.
I use Small block Chev aluminum flywheels and gear drive starters.
The Chev flywheels are far cheaper than other aluminum wheels. Mainly because there are more of them around. Some machine work involved.

It will fit but you will have to modify the starter, reversing the gear, machining clearance, and install a bronze bearing in the bell housing. Some require relieving the bell housing to clear the ring gear teeth. You can have your a flywheel lightened to about the same weight as a stock cast iron V8 wheel and not have to mess with the starter. I do it but mainly with Aluminum wheels. I would PM Pete regarding his conversion.

I have gotten them from ebay and swap meets for $100 to $150.
You need to plug one hole and redrill the flange holes.
There is a 4 lb wheel on ebay right now. Takes a 6.5 inch clutch. $50
Ideal setup for a race engine or speedster.
Here's the starter pic.
