V8 60hp thermostats.

I recently inherited my uncles 37 pickup with a V8 60. It was parked in 1970! Needless to say it needs everything rebuilt or replaced. I pulled the thermostats and they were heavily corroded. I ran them through my ultrasonic cleaner and they look ok. Should I re-use them or try to find new ones? I would like some new 160 degree thermostats but they are proving hard to find.

Why don't you just test them? Put them in a pot of water on the stove and heat 'em up. If they don't move, you can throw them out. Check the temperature they open at. (I use my infrared thermometer.) If they operate, they're probably good. You might want to do them one at a time so you can keep closer tabs on what they're doing. Then you'll know if they open and at what temperature. Given the parts made these days, the existing thermostats may be a better choice than new ones.

Unless there are other problems, 160 thermostats might just be too cold. I run 170's but a lot of guys prefer 180's.
