V8-60 Water pumps

Hey Guys; I am normally over on the Model A site, however a good friend of mine has a Model A with a V8-60 (early model with the sheet metal water jacket). Any way, the right hand water pump is leaking water behind the pulley and making quite a mess. It's getting on the top of the distributor. How do you go about stopping this type of leak? If it was my guess its the front pump seal. Can they be replaced or rebuild the complete pump? Should you do both pumps at the same time? Help! Where do you get parts?

One more quick question. What kind of 'Top' is supposed to be on the distributor? Right know the condenser is visible and it looks as if the 'Top' is made of Aircraft micarta. Flat with one bolt and then the coil wire, with the condenser.

Thanks; Tom - ATL

That distributor "top" sounds like an adapter to allow use of a later type coil. Normally, the stock-type Ford coil mounts directly on top of the distributor in place of that other rig on there now. DD

Usually when the need arises to rebuild/replace one wp the other one probably is not far behind in needing attention as well. I usually replace both pumps at the same time. I don't know of anyone who rebuilds 60hp wp's, so hopefully your friend can find rebuild kits and do them himself.
The phenolic plate on top of the distributor is an aftermarket adapter that allows the use of a more modern cylindrical coil. I really do not like using those adapter kits. I prefer using an original coil that has been rewound by someone like Skip Haney in Punta Gorda, FL.

Does Skip rebuild 60 pumps or just the bigger V-8 ones?

There are two kinds of water pumps for the 60. The early ones were threaded. Be sure you know which kind you have before ordering.

The kits we stock have the correct o rings / gaskets for either type pump, so it's not necessary to order specifically to your pump. The kits have been out of stock for awhile but we just received a small shipment against a larger stock order.

total rework inside..no leaks. New Bearings/shaft.

Skip does not rebuild the 60hp pumps

Does anyone know of someone besides Bob Hall that rebuilds these pumps? Unfortunately Mr. Hall passed away this past year.

I have 2 NOS Ford, water pump bearings 52-85108 for the V8-60 if you need them. The best ignition for a 60 is the 42 & up pancake distributor with the crab cap. You need the Harmon & Collins adaptor for that conversion. I believe Dick Spadaro, RIP, had them. Not sure who bought his inventory of where you can get them now. Also have several Ford NOS starter drive springs, 52-11376.
