V8 60 Water Pump Leak

Have a 39 Ford with V8 60...drivers side water pump is leaking water at the bottom of the pump. What is the best way to tighten or remove the pump? i have a rebuilt pump to install. Are new gaskets needed when replacing the old pump?

Thanks for any input.

Spanner wrench that fits is the best way, a large punch can work but it will leave some damage.

There are 2 types of pumps, one has tapered seat gaskets, the other has flat gaskets.
the rebuilt pump should come with the gasket, the type of pumps used have to match the front cover.

The impeller is also the seal and has to have a very smooth surface on the pump body to seal.

The "gasket" is a copper ring, similar to a spark plug gasket, but of course bigger in diameter.

I had one V8 60 pump on my 37 that would bottom out before sealing. I installed (2) of the copper gaskets with some Permatex about 17 years ago, and have not had a leak since.
