V8 60 starter drive

Well, I got the starter drive for the 8N tractor. It is held in place by a pin instead of a key & set screw. I have yet to figure out how to release the end piece to insert the pin, after of course, I have drilled the starter shaft
for the pin. Help...... The gear has also run down the spiral and I can't figure out how to get it back where it belongs. Help.......

Dave,
I have a couple v8 60 starters complete....shall I bring one up in
Sept?
As you no doubt know the armature shaft is longer on the V8 60 vs
the full size starter.

Don: Got your phone message last week while I was gone. I have nad NO experience with V8 60's or their starters, so couldn't have done you any good.
Hopefully the other guys know and can help???

Don, I looked in my 9N service manual and it says press down on the anchor plate, Part 11372, against the compression of the spring, Part 11375, while removing the retainer ring, Part 11373. Continue to press down on anchor plate and remove the pin, Part 11365, which goes completely through the body of the starter drive and armature shaft.

OK Bob. The drive is not on the shaft so I've got to find some means to compress it. I'll work on it. The crazy thing is that Charlie says the 60 starter shaft is longer. I know I took a standard starter out with the old Bendix. It was a bear to get out. I think the only way they got it in was without the pan, and obviously no manifold.
I could just not **** the starter sufficiently against the pan to clear the ring gear.

Charlie, would one of those starters be available?

I'm also wondering, should I get the 8N drive mounted on the regular starter, will it work, given Charlie's comment that the 60 shaft is longer?

According to the green bible starter chart the 52-11002 (V8-60) starter was replaced by the 8N-11002 starter both using the 52-11350-C (V8-60) starter drive. I would say that the V8-60 starter with the long shaft should work. But, I don't know for sure.

I looked in the tractor parts book and the green bible and they show
the same part numbers for the 60 hp and 8N starter and drive.

Well, I'm going to see if "David" has one assembled that I can look at. I'll tell you, this little V8 60 has been a thorn in my side! But Thank you for the helps thus far! Don

Hi Guys: I just had my starter out of my V8 60 HP. Here is what I found. The overall lenght of the V8-60 armature is 3/4" longer than the standard big V8 starter armature.

There are two styles of pin: 52 11365-A .500" long ,use with armature with a blind hole.

52- 11365-B 1.100" use with armature with a through hole.

Pin diameter is .248"

At a local car show I meet a guy who had some 60 HP starter drives. He gave me one to see if it is a 60 HP or not. I compared the new drive to mine .......same number of teeth, overall size is the same. The only visable difference is there is a short pin that is threaded on one end at the spring end. I decided to make a pin from a 1/4" bolt and drill the drive to accept a long pin.
I installed the new drive on my starter and bolted it back into the V8 60 . Hook up the battery and hit the starter button...... I can hear the starter wind up but no engagement with the flywheel.
Remove the starter and back to the bench, and remove the new drive. With both drives next to each other I unwind each and measure. The V8 60 hp starter drive has a .250 longer reach. The new drive was a replacement Bendix A 1792. Gary in MN

I've got 2 spare V8-60 starters and 2 100 HP starters and the shaft difference is 1/2". Are you sure about your's at 3/4"?

Gary,I looked in some old NAPA catalogs I have and A 1792 crosses to 6561085 shows Kaiser and Hudson. 52-11350 crosses to 6561084 60 hp.

Hello:

Gary in LA: I put the starter back in the engine. I may have misread the tape. I will be able to check another one in a couple of days.
Do your armatures have a blind hole or a through hole ??

Bob C. Thanks for the info on the Bendix starter drive.

Hello: I stopped by Little Dearborn Parts today and measured three v8 60hp armatures.

13 1/8", 13 3/8", 13 3/16" all had through holes.

one was a Ford reman, other two were more than likely replacement / aftermarket items.
