V8 60 - Can I use a standard engine stand?

Since the transmission bolt pattern is mostly the same as pre-'49 Fords, it would be no great trick getting a junk trans case modified to hold the 60 engine on a conventional stand excep for being very nose heavy. I would be concerned about the strength of the flywheel housing without it being firmly bolted and the ballance of the stand. I have a 60 on a home made cart using a trans, mounted front and rear. This arrangement is only good for upright use. The common engine stand fixture for mounting flatheads on the exhaust flange obviously would be useless for the 60. Good Luck: Fred A

I got a couple of lengths of 3/16" or 1/4" by about 3" wide pieces and used an old exhaust manifold to copy the exhaust bolt hole pattern with. I let those pieces run wild to the rear of the block after I bolted them on. I joined them together with a cross piece that I may have put a couple of holes into that bolt into the bellhousing and welded them together. With that I bolted it all on a cheapo rotating engine stand. Sorry, I would take a picture of it, but it is buried back in a corner of the garage. I remember that it did not take a lot of time or materials due to the smallness of the 60.

Rob, whether or not to hang a flathead directly off the flywheel housing is an oooold debate.

Millions have done it with the 85's ... a couple probably broke and fell (?). The V8-60 is lighter. I've done it more than once and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

(Fred, a very good friend made up a V8-60 exhaust port fixture just like the 85hp. Have never seen one for sale otherwise. EDIT: EXCEPT STUMPY"S BELOW ... thanks, Capt John.))

The picture is of my 60 on a conventional stand. YOU HAVE TO LEAVE THE OILPAN ON. The upper bolts are not strong enough. If you want to get inside the bottom use Stumpy's adaptor.

The 60 weighs 420 pounds complete as shown. Normal engine stands can hold a hemi which weighs almost twice that.

I put it on to clean and paint it because it was already rebuild. Working on the distributor, etc, is easy this way.

Rob,

You can mount it w/o the oil pan on. I have built many this way with zero issues. I'm not saying that it CAN'T be a problem....just that I have never had it be a problem.

I've got (2) V8-60's that have been on standard engine stands, without oil pans for years, without any problems.

Not sure I'd hang a heavier 85 hp this way for very long though.
