Use oil additives or not?

...and using synthetic, and changing every 500 miles, would be kinda pricey!!

why would anyone install syth and change it at 500 miles......? to funny!

Why? Because they want the best lubrication money can buy. and they're trying to keep their engine as clean as possible. Sorta like most folks who used to change their oil in their daily driver every 2000 miles. Little by little it dawned on them that they could stretch those intervals to 5000 miles and in some cases,7500 miles without harming their engines. From what I've seen, synthetic oil is wasted in a mod. A. As you say, it's kinda pricey. However, some folks need that reassurance that their using "the best"! Who knows, they may be right, but I will go on using Rotella or somesuch oils until it's proven to me that I'm wrong for doing so.

Thanks Terry that was exactly my point. I too just stick with the Castrol-Shell-Mobil-Motorcraft regular oil, which ever is on sale at the time for the 'A'. Bout ready to try out Walmart's Tech oil which they tell me is Mobil anyway.

Use Mobil 1 in the everyday car but seems like overkill in a Model A;)

Started using synthetic oil in a new 98 windstar after 500 miles, changed oil every 5000 till 50000 miles then every 10000 miles,at 125000 when we sold it(kids grown so no need for van)motor was spotless looking in valve cover thru oil fill and ran like a top!!Never used a drop of oil, fast forward just got my first flathead(new rebuild) ran for 500 miles with 30 non detergent with zinc additive. never believed synthetic would cause a leak over petroleum or vise verse. had a small leak at the rear of the pan (typical). just changed oil (10-30 synthetic Kendall) guess what? No leak!! Beats me but I'm happy!! Pete

I just sold my 99 E-150 174,000 mi. The engine ran perfectly because I had changed it every 5000 mi. I usually used Castrol 10-30. Some Rotella. My new Transit needs Synthetic and I'm not happy about that, Like my Jetta TDI (diesel) 5 qts at Walmart $25.

I bought a new Chevy S-10 in 1988 with free oil changes for the life of the truck. Cool, every 3,500 miles I'd go in for my free oil and lube.
Well, the dealer that the sold me the truck sold out. So with the new dealer no more free oil. Oh' well, for over 10 years and approximately
150,000 miles I got free oil!:) Great little truck, I've still got it, but I did
buy a new Ford Ranger in 2001.;)

I have delayed commenting on this thread but finally will give my opinion. I have taken a lot of engines apart and I can tell when one has added STP just by wiping my finger against the crankcase wall. It does stick and makes everything slippery but removes with solvent. Now that being said, what happens when a car sits for a few weeks or even longer, the oil drains down. Some may still remain in places but when you start it up some things may be dry. Oil additives may help and they don't cost that much. I always use 4 quarts of oil (either 40wt in the summer 30 wt in the winter or 20w50) and one STP. You guys can say what you want but it has worked for me.

I use STP, has a little zink in it and quiets the lifer some that needs adjusted (original set-up no adjuster)...
