Upholstery Question

How much fabric is required to reupholster the seats of a 29 Tudor if I want to do this myself. This will be challenging as I have never done this before. Any helpful suggestion are welcome. Thanks, Harold

One way that works for me is to completely "unsew" the seat upholstery and lay it out on a sheet, paper, or something else that has been trimmed to the width of the replacement fabric. That way you can come up with a good estimate as to the length that you will need. Be concerned with the pattern and be sure the pieces are laid out correctly. I always allow plenty of room for error and generally order at least ten percent more than I need.

We (my wife is a wiz with the sewing machine) then cut the new material to match the old patterns, adjusting as she deams necessary, and she sews it together using thread that is appropriate for the material. I find that the ladies at Joanne's Fabric are a great help. JoAnnes also has a huge selection of material and frequently offers 50% off coupons. Gar Williams

How close to original are you trying to get? Are you just trying to dress it up a little? I use a little less than a yard for the bottom cushion but didnt do any stitching just covered the old stuff (moths chewed a few holes in it). I wasnt going for completely original, i wanted to dress it up a little so i used a matching suede (trying to go for a custom look like i think i would have done in that period if i was around) and will do the same for the back seat when i get to it. The back rest I made myself because im about 6"8" and taking that spring back out gave me about 5-6 inches to sit back so dont pay attention to that. It was very simple to do but like i said i didnt do any stitching. A staple gun and an hour in the garage was all it took.
