Update on steering column bracket with/without reenforcement

The reason for this excersize is to try to determine about when Ford did away with this reenforcement on the middle backside of the steering column support bracket in 1928.

For sure it is on the very early tanks but somewhere between January 1928 and June 1928, the bracket was redesigned and the reenforcement droped from the part.

Since the information from the Ford Archives is not all there (Missing the information from January through August 1928 as whoever "copied" the data to begin with did not copy the back of the information cards) and since tanks were not dated until May of 1928, this aspect is hard to figure out.

The only other resource to look at would be the part drawings...this may give the answer.

However since FORD utilized all his parts, there may be in existance some early dated tanks with the reenforcment on the brackets themselves along with those that are not in the same time frame. The change could of been during the "long" choke rod bracket time frame.

THANK YOU to all who took the time to look at your tanks!

Steve,

It appears you really need response from people who may have cars dated prior to June 1928. All of the responses had no ribs, (Except the later 1930 style, not part of your research) and there were only two from as early as June 1928. Both of those June cars had no ribs.

Hopefully you'll get a few responses from owners of earlier cars so your research is more complete.

EDIT to posting:
Ooops! I missed the very last posting by Ron with info on his December 1927 vehicle that has the rib. But again, more responses from early car owners would be nice to round out this research.

Steve, I have a June 1, 28 gas tank in my Roadster that has the short GAV and no reinforcing rib on the steering column plate. There is however 2 holes in the plate about 3/4" diameter in the lower part of the plate. If you need a picture, just ask.... Jim

Steve ... the back of the steering column support on my Jan '28 open pickup does NOT have a 'rib'. hope this helps with your mystery!! cr

Steve,

OK,.....without overloading you,( I thought you did this already), start a new post
with tank dates, with/without the rib and the type of chock rod support ( flat iron
or short forged ) so WE can see the progression AND which plant, if possible. Have
it end....say 7-28.
At this point I'm more interested in the date stamp.

1.) A3261, a mid-Dec '27, which has the stamped strap choke rod support, does have the reinforcement rib. (early '28 Coupe)
2.) Firewall date stamp 12/05/1928, with later forged choke rod support, NO reinforcement rib. (early '29 RPU)
3.) Firewall date stamp 1/02/1929, with later forged choke rod support, NO reinforcement rib. (early '29 Tudor)
