Unusual Model A oil pan

Thank you for the input, guys. We are still scratching our heads. I'm kinda on the side with you guys who think it is a way to warm the oil. But, not sure. It's a good conversation starter at the shop.

So I guess it gets pretty cold where you are.:D

Chief used a pan of HOT coals, to warm the MOLASSES like oil. AND, hot water to free the frozen brakes. (I HATE COLD!!)----Thet's why I live in CALEDORNIA!
Bill Warm

I can remember a 2 cylinder Murphy diesel that had fittings plumbed into the pan like that.It was on a sawmill. You would drive up to it with a truck, then hook a couple of hoses from the truck to the pan fittings. In about 1/2 hour you could spin the engine right over. The guys would sharpen the saw, reset it,get the rest of the machines started, actually sawing was the last part of morning setup. They had hoses on the skidders too,but they usually just built fires under them.
