unusual but useful model A accessory

Went to put gas in the DD yesterday and on a whim, grabbed a big old funnel that has been in the garage since the 30's. I knew it had some strange bracket/flange at the small end of it, but I figured it was for a tractor or some machine that I was unfamiliar with. Figured I'd work around it. Lo and behold, it screwed right into the gas filler opening like a glove ! It stands perfectly erect and locks into the grooves on the tank. Obviously this was made for A's and similar cars, but I never paid any attention to it. It has no markings so I don't know who made it. Is anyone familiar with these ? It is in essentually NOS condition and practical as all get out ! :)

I thought this was common knowledge, I use my funnels like this all the time. Most have a couple of small tabs towards the bottom that are hidden in the galvanizing that can be bent out and will fit the radiator neck on a '30-'31. This comes in handy for leveling or straightening out the neck.

We call them tractor funnels.Been around forever on farms. They have a couple of different size tabs for different size fillers. They are still made by Plews.I just got a new one a few months ago.I just twist them into the tops of the tractor tanks and flip the can into it.Mine doesn't quite clear the windshield in the A's.

There's also a larger model from WWII known as a "Tank Funnel"...an accessory for your Ford powered Sherman. It had capacity of slightly over 5 gallons so that the person standing on the tank could simply upend a jerry can and not worry about spillage. Two jerrycans would be about total fillup for an A...

Bill, Reminds me of one of my earliest memories ('48 or '49, I think). Dad had just bought me a new cap that I wore everwhere. One day our '40 Ford overheated on a country road. The ditch had water in it and my prized cap was used to carry water from the ditch to the Ford. Was I ever an upset little kid!

I have on of those funnels in the barn, and use it for my Farmall H. When I was a kid on the farm we had one for the Farmalls. Alas, it will not work on my 29 tudor.

Dad had one just like it, we used it all the time to fill Model A's, also worked in John Deere Two Cylinders, and yes, very handy. Herm.

We had one on the farm when I was a youngster, it worked on both the John Deere B and the Farmall M.

40 Deluxe,
I'll bet you were upset!:eek: Funny, how come we remember crap like this, and forget some important stuff??
Oh joy! I just heard today that our old fashioned hardware store has WATER BAGS hanging in the rafters, gotta' go wheel and deal on a bunch of those!! I hope they're "DESERT" brand. :D

OK, interesting thread. After you've filled your tank, where do you put it for the ride home?? Gas stinks. I just stick the nozzle in the tank and pump 1-15$ worth, enough til next time.

there is a fella in Oregon that makes a real nice turned billet gas tank adapter that looks like this but is much more compact. It is engineered to hold modern gas nozzles at the right height and angle that you can turn on the nozzle and be completely hands off. The gas shut off clicks off automatically when the fule is about 1 inch below the upper surface of the gas tank. Works great and gives a hands-free full tank every time. Small and you wipe iit off and slip it back into the toolbox after each fill.. Measures about 3 inches tall and about 3 inches across.. He makes then for 28-29 and 30-31's
