Unrestored 1930 Town Sedan

A couple of years ago there was a posting/picture of an unrestored 1930 Town Sedan shown in a large shop with a couple of guys standing by it. I believe it was a Briggs and the colors were more brown/tan than the accepted correct Copra/Chicle but they were obviously original judging by the wear. I think the car was in California. I am unable to pull it up on the new search. Does anyone have those pictures? I painted my T/S in almost identical colors and would like some proof that Henry did too. Thanks , Bob

I saved the photos, Bob.
Chicle & copra is my favorite color & I'm very fond of unrestored original cars.
I will try to email the photos if the private message thingie will allow attachments.
(the little thumbnails are all I can post here, since I'm too stubborn to fool with PhotoBuckie or similar sites)

The Judging Standards, section 14, page 5, lists seven different color / stripe combinations for the 155-C,D. Other than Copra/Chicle combinations, there are no other shades of brown listed. Gar Williams.

chicle & copra......

there seem to be different interperetations of these colors:
brown-ish, grey-ish and green-ish.

at the 2003 Dearborn MARC meet, I seem to recall there was one of each variant in fine point judging.

JS, page 14-1 "paint finishes should simulate the original color....."

have always wondered which, if any, lost the least points for paint color authenticity.

This Briggs Town Sedan is absolutely original in color. It has just a hair over 30,000, miles, and the history is known quite a ways back, but I forget how far. It currently resides in California. I recall that it came with many repair receipts from over the years, including one to repair the carpet where the lady owner's high heel shoe created a hole. I've ridden in it and driven it. It runs like a brand new car, much better than any restored car I've ever driven. This seems to be normal for low mileage unrestored cars. There's just something about how Henry assembled them!
The off-shade Chicle and Copra colors we see so often originated partly from the old Ditzler color charts from the late sixties or early seventies. They had a bit of gray or green in them. It's a pleasing color, just not accurate. Some leeway is given during judging on this issue, but how much consideration for off-shade would be dependant on the particular Team Captian for that area during judging. Check your Model A News magazine of an issue or two back. On the cover, and as the Showcase article, Steve Ryan's Coupe is shown in the correct shade of Chicle and Copra. He did a GREAT restoration on that one! Tim Johnstone did one in the correct shade also.

Thanks to all who helped on this. That is definitely the car. I finally finished my Murray 155-C after seven years and it is a spittin image of that car, color-wise. Sometime in the next week I will get a picture up I hope. I know it is supposed to be a piece of cake now to post pictures but I need to work up some courage. Bob

Re:My1930 Town Sedan

Hope these show! I painted my 1930 Townsedan in these colors. This is not an original "as Henry did it" color scheme. Same car in two different lights and angles appears different. I wanted Thorne Brown over light Arabian Tan simply because I liked the color combination. If am not mistaken its a 1931 combination.

Re: photos

Nice pictures of that original car! I also have a 155-C in Chicle and Copra, and it varies some from what is shown. My question is striping.....I can't see any on that picture....is it just worn away and not visible? I believe Straw striping was standard on the car.
