Need help, Is there a special clip removal tool of any kind to take out the little wire clip retainers on universal joints ? removed one but it was a bear to get off. thanks, Bob

You have to cut them with a grinder to remove them usually. The u-joint repair kits include new clips along with the bushings and the spider, so it's not a big problem.

I use a real thin cut off wheel in a Dremel to cut a little right alongside the clip and then I can get a tool under the clip to pull it out.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I was thinking maybe cut a little bit with a dremel grinder so I might get a pointed tool under those little suckers. It really does not need a rebuild, I was just wanting to take it apart to bead blast the pieces with out getting junk in the needle bearings. If I were to just cut them off where might I get just new clips ? anybody got a supply ? Again thanks everyone, snowing crazy here today, good day to work on it in a warm basement ! Bob

there are no needle bearings. The Ford u-joint from 1928-48 had simple steel bushings. If the thing feels snug, just clean it in kerosene and reinstall. Only the Lincoln u-joint had the needles.

If you need clips I have thousands. I bought all the parts to build u-joints from the manufacturer in chicago in the 70's.

If you try to pry them out instead of cutting them, make sure you are wearing safety glasses. Those little clips can put someones eyes out when they pop out. Don't ask me how I know this. I was very fortunate to have safety glasses on when this happened to me. Now I always cut them in half with a small cutter/rotor zip blade.

Once more guys, thanks for the advise, it is appreciated. I have not been on the site a long time but have learned a heck of a lot by reading what others have posted thus far. Almost like going back to school but I like the subject matter better than I did back when, altho the teachers might have been better eye candy than on here ! :D

HEY GUYS: We where just been told we.... "are old, ugly, and smell like old gear oil " .... Tee hee hee .....OLD....BILL

Actually, yes there is. Specially designed pair of pliers. Unless you're in the U-joint business, the above methods are much more cost effective.

Sometimes you cut the center of the cap making the clips meaningless. But don't smoke that joint! Careful too, cuz hot grease splatters everywhere when using a cutting torch. Hot wrenches are such a universal solution! Just stay away from the yoke and everything will work out. Obviously, there is no saving the U joint with this method.

I read somewhere that somebody used piston pin locking rings to use for the u-joints. I think it might have been Rowdy that has done that?
