Universal Grease - How much?

On most greased joints on the Model A one can see grease coming out after x-amount of pumps with the grease gun; such as a spindle, water pump, etc., and thus knowing when to quit. But not so with the universal joint.

I have been searching through data I have trying to find out if there is an amount of grease one should put in the universal at the recommended 500-mile interval, but have not found such info.

One can pump and pump into this fitting, but cannot see when enough grease has been put in. Others have said grease (if enough is pumped) can start flowing in to the speedometer cable.

Has any one heard or read what amount the mechanics of the day put in? Or is there a way to tell when you have put in enough?

well I was told until you see it come out of the joints and what not. But was recently told 1 pump of the gun should be enough for all joints but more importantly the universal. Other might want to give there points.

bogdonj - I agree that 1-2 pumps would be sufficient in most of the joints, but in respect to the universal joint; you are putting grease into the housing the joint resides in and not directly into the joint itself.

On an open universal joint on later model vehicles, the grease zerk is attached to the joint spindle (?terminology) and the grease ends up at the roller bearings. That is not the case with the Model A universal joint; thus I would suspect one should be putting in more than 1-2 pumps. But how much more is enough?

The only way to "see" grease visually is to remove the speedometer drive housing from the torque tube. You can then pump till you see some protrusion in that area the put the speedo housing back on.

Go to the early v-8 archives and search . I would recomend the corn head grease an102562 by John Deer. Fill the cavity till it comes out the joints. then on regrease it will be several pumps to get it to come full. Frank pkny

Remove one of the small bolts that hold the speedometer drive to the torque tube and quit pumping grease when you see some in that bolt hole. Do that about once a year.

Frank & Richard - Thanks for the advice on removing the bolt/speedometer drive housing. I didn't realize that the bolt hole went all the way thru to the universal housing. I'll have to give yout method a try.
