Undersized Pilot Bearing

Is there an undersized (inside opening) pilot bearing that I could use if I turn down a worn transmission shaft that fits in it? I have searched 3 catalogs and not found such a bearing.

Yes it has been done, a fellow had some made up and selling the set at a swap-meet. He said it had a metric ID. Check a bearing supply house

If you have the equipment to turn down the worn pilot area, why not use your lathe to make a sleeve to press over the turned area, then turn that down to the final finished original size after pressing it on.

The correct bearing is easy to find. It is a mixed inch/metric size. I bought one a few years ago. Unfortunately I cannot remember any more details. :-(

There is a shop in Southern California that provides that service. They turn down the shaft and press a sleeve on and turn it down to the size of the bearing. Jim's Automotive Services 714-546-2969. The price is very reasonable.

I had (50) of those bushings made to sleeve the input shaft. If you want to go that route, I could make some available.

I have seen an internet thread about three years ago that confirmed the bearings were available. I can not remember where I saw it, but the thread gave the bearing numbers. Sorry I did not keep it.

Another thought....I have been faced with the same condition a couple times and the solution I have used is to weld the pilot surface and then turn the shaft back down to the correct diameter. The first one I completed was my own Pickup about 10 years ago. It has worked for me. I probably have about 12k miles on the pickup since doing this so I do not know about the long term durability of the weld vs the other suggested method.
I was able to weld and turn the shaft in less than 1/2 hour in my shop...and it did not cost me anything....
Good Day!

Richard, I believe that the information posted below will answer your question. This is information I have gleaned from previous posts on Ford Barn. I have not used this bearing as I have the facilities to build up the shaft and turn it down to the original dimension, but I have no doubt that it will work. Don/WI

Down the postings on Jan. 24 Chet asked about the pilot bearing with the reduced ID so you could just turn down the input shaft without welding-up or sleeving. As I mentioned below Terry Oberer posted years ago that Grainger had a "special" bearing with the original OD and a 5/8 inch ID. Finally found what I think is renumbered on the Grainger site, pg. 180, about the third from the bottom, item # 1L097 or 5U537 depending on shielding, etc. 40mm OD x 5/8 inch Id. About $12-13. Look up the "Technically Speaking" vol 4 There is an article about this bearing made by NTN (6203ZZ/15.875/2A) with 40mm O.D. and 5/8' I.D. It is available here in Baltimore at Applied Industrial Technology. I also think I have found it at Tractor Supply (sku#11-99307). Both bearings are double sealed and should work.

I think the ID should be the smaller size. There was a fellow I saw at one of the swapmeets that turned down the shaft to fit a bearing with a MM inside dia. and the outside was the same as the original pilot bearing. A slick fix! He sold the set-up ready to go.
Both dimensions originally were metric with the OD being 40mm. The "special" is the ID being the 5/8 inch instead of the original metric which was larger.
Terry Oberer posted "Special pilot bearing" July 25, 2005. He said Grainger carries a "203 Special" with the original OD but a 5/8 inch ID.
Sorry, I just don't remember the exact size, but I ordered it from the chart on this web page:

It's one of the bearings with a metric OD and inch ID. Check the sizes of your old bearing and it should be obvious which one is correct.
Grainger's has the bearing. I believe it is 40mm OD and 15.875mm (0.625 inches) ID. Turn the pilot end to 0.625 and install this bearing.
16mm = 0.630”
