Cleaning up underside of gas cap that is pretty cruddy. What is the best thing to put on underside to keep it from getting cruddy again, and not rusting?

Also, replacement gaskets for early V8 caps are not available. Only available for Model A's. What is best to make one with?

Thanks for any tips.

Today. Cleaned up pretty nice. Want to protect it as much as possible. :D

Soak the cap in EvapoRust or similar chelating agent. It will eat all the rust and not touch anything else. Then use some gas tank sealer on the inner surface of the cap. Mine got coated when I slushed the tank with KBR tank liner but their are others. the inside of the cap looks like it did the day I removed the cap to let it dry. Not a hint of rust.
