Yes, you need it. It's actually a type of spring that has a specific type of name that I'd assume was name after the inventor. When you look, it's slightly concaved and this allows for some slight movement while still being substantial enough to hold the input shaft while also taking the force of the drive shaft wanting to push the U-joint forward and aft.

Hold the u-joint on the transmission output shaft. https://www.brattons.com/universal-joint-special-washer-and-bolt.html I can't imagine Ford would of put it on there if they didn't think it was necessary.

The flat washer with the notch in it fits over the end of the transmission output shaft and prevents oil from leaking out through the splines. The Mitchell company offers one that has a rubber seal associated with it. They provide one with each of their synchro transmissions.

The edge of the dished washer has an upset to engage a spline end .This stops the washer turning when you tighten it up .

We are talking about the keyed washer that holds the u-joint to the output shaft? It is there to prevent the u-joint from moving back and forth to maintain the proper center line of same. For the Model T the u-joint was pinned to the drive shaft both for thrust control and keep that center. The Model A being setup different re thrust but still needed to keep it centered, attached to to the output shaft.
