U joint housing bolts

Finally putting my ‘28 back together. I have the split shaft service brakes so I have the old clamshell. I installed everything with a bolt kit from one of the suppliers. According to all the prints I find there are no lock washers used.

When assembled I am seeing that the castellated nut is so far below the hole drilled for the cotter pin to effectively make it useless. Suggestions?

I could add lock washers to everything.
I could add flat washers to everything.
I could clean the original hardware and reuse it (least favorite option)

Whole housing shot just for posterity.

Why are you reluctant to use the original fasteners?

You have what, six of them? One failure is not fatal. And you can see it easily if it is missing.

And besides, the most severe portion of a fastener service life (for most of them) is in the torque to installation. If it doesn't break off under the influence of your wrench - then it probably won't break until you take it off.

(or try to take it off - ha, ha.)

My $.02,

My '28 is the same yours but had lock washers under the original bolts. Someone else thought it was an easier installation/assembly.

I replaced the same bolts on a customer's '29 using cotter pins. After two years all the bolts could now be spun by finger ? I'm usually not lazy about torqueing bolts tight, SO was it because these were repo's ?? (I've since collected originals to replace them.)

I too don't like disturbing history and when possible re-use originals.

The 1932 parts book shows bolt 22229-S 3/8x1 1/4, when used to replace 1 5/32 bolt use lock washer 34827-S2

Using the original fasteners is always preferred and fit better too. Why would you put up with using the inferior fasteners you wasted your money on?

Chrome…… cadmium ……. stainless steel , doesn’t get you home ! If your original hardware isn’t damaged by over torquing, rounded off corners, deep pitting, or bent , use the original ones ! One exception would be locking washers, replace them
