Two tooth steering box

Hi: Can some one please email me the instructions on how to adjust a 2 tooth steering box. I really don't have a week or two to wait if I order a book. I am doing some work on the front end and would like to take some play out of the wheel at the same time. Thanks, Dan R.

I guess that I may have had a better chance at a reply if I started some sort of controversy? All Model A's should have rack and pinion steering! Dan R.

It is sort of an involved procedure. It would take a lot of time and space to write the procedure out for you here on the Barn. I do not know of a site that has the procedure for you to go to, may be someone does.

I would get in touch with one of the good vendors and order a book and have it sent Priority Mail or 3rd Day Air. You should have it by Wednesday or Thursday. Les Andrews Book is very good and I there is also a very good write up on this procedure in the Service Factory Bulletins. You should have both of the books if you are working on a Model A Anyway. Lots of good stuff in them.

It is also possible that someone lives near you who could help you or lend you a copy of the instructions.

Let us know where you live and some contact information, I am sure there may be someone who could help.

Just some suggestions,

Chris

Its not an easy simple quick procedure,, its about a 4 beer procedure and 12 beers for someone like me to type it all out.. If I had a scanner It would have been easy and I could have sent it to you..

I thought that this would be a simple request. Some one could scan the steering box instructions and email them to me, but I guess that I was mistaken. I will order the book and wait a week or two for it. I guess a week or two isn't much time to be without the Model A, especially when we get around 6 weeks of summer. Dan R.

Sunday in the summer is a bad time. The guys with the info at their finger tips are probably out in their cars and then doing family stuff.

Some of this stuff takes a 24 hour period for the info to cycle in as you need to find the guy who has it scanned in their computer. Your question requires a bit more work to answer.

If you have the service bulletins then you would have the procedure. That is one of the must have books if you own an A.

I saw your posting in the morning, but did not turn on this computer till now. I checked and I do not have anything handy.

WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?

There may be someone near by who can help.

It's really not complicated at all to do. It's detailed in the service bulletins. It's better if you have someone to help you since you to work the steering wheel and work the pitman arm. There is a little trial and error to get it right and it will depend if your box is not worn out. You have to jack up the front end, remove the steering link from the pitnam, loosen the box cover screws and play with the adjustments while working the steering wheel so there is no binding. Don't play with the big eccentric screw unless you moved it.

Dan. How much slop do you have in your Pitman Arm. I'm rebuilding mine and found out that I needed to replace almost all the guts. What's the history of yours? If it's OE you may need to do more than an adjustment.

Hello: Thanks for your help. I have about 2" of play at the steering wheel. The car is very original and the box looks pretty original. I thought that I would try to adjust it before I get too crazy with it. I may not keep the car and I already have more into it than it is worth. Dan.

Dan,
If you're not planning on keeping the car you might take a little slack out of the box but the adjustments are probably down as far as they can go.
Good luck. Pete

Cape Breton Island, Canada

Now I undrestany why there may not be many Model A People in your immediate area or it may take a while for you to get stuff shipped to you.

If I would have known your location in the first place, I could have gotten the pages in Les Andrews Manual scanned and E-Mailed to you.

If you are still without this information, please let me know and I will try to see what I can do.

Take care,

Chris.

Hi Dan:

I think you have received an e-mail from someone else regarding the adjustment.

I have recently relocated from Ontario to Pictou, NS (for others on this site, it is only an hour or so drive from Cape Breton Island) with my 1930 Town Sedan and have brought most of my Model A books with me. I had the same problem as you original car, low mileage, 2" play in the steering wheel but a periodic shimmy when I went over a bump. I spend the afternoon doing all the recommended adjustments, I have reduced the steering wheel play to ~3/4", but the steering is not quite right still wanders a bit on the road and is tight. I think it may be the toe-in which I have not adjusted yet or is it the bad roads in Nova Scotia?

Send me an e-mail if you are interested in borrowing any of my books . all are a great source of information
