TWO-Piece Oil Pan-Advantage/Purpose?

These fairly rare, two-piece oil pans have always been 'desirable', and are usually seen with a price tag to prove it. What was the intended purpose that Ford had in mind for producing these specialized oil pans? Coop

To be able to replace a clutch without having to pull the sump portion of the pan.

They were a truck part from what I understand.

That is my understanding as well. For trucks for easier clutch inspection/replacement.

It wasn't for removing the clutch and pressure plate as much as it was for being able to remove the flywheel without having to drop the complete oil pan.
In many c&pp replacements, with a one piece oil pan, folks chose not to have the flywheel ground because they did not want to go through the hassle of removing the oil pan with the engine in place, and they definitely did not want to remove the complete engine to take the oil pan off. This resulted in many new c&pp replacements be done half a$$.

Thanks for clarifying. When I say clutch, I mean the clutch assembly and not just the disc

Edited to clarify details on 11" pressure plate:
The 9/9-1/2", 10" clutch and pressure plate ASSEMBLIES can all removed without the need to remove the one piece oil pan & flywheel cover, it's only the flywheel itself and the 11" pressure plate that will not come through that rear opening.

No axe to grind here, but as it appears to be a truck thing, even if the flywheel was not changed (or resurfaced) the 11" clutch normally fitted to trucks would other wise need oil pan removal if not for the removeable rear piece.

I've played around with different transmissions, flywheels and pressure plates and my 2 piece pan has made the work much easier to do.

Mart, you are totally correct, I just check, and the 11" pressure plate will not fit through the rear opening on the early FH engines with the integral bell housing and one piece oil pan & flywheel housing. That rear opening is ~ 11-1/2", which does allow the 11" clutch disk to go through, but the pressure plate will not go through due to the diameter at the mounting flanges. Only the 9" to 10" c&pp's can be installed without removing the one piece oil pan w/flywheel cover.

Hell, I'd like to have one . . . but can't justify paying $500+ for one. For that money, I'd modify a stock one, increase the sump capacity and put a windage try in it . . .

Just sold one to a member over on the HAMB for $150.00 delivered next time I go to Pismo Beach. I had no use for it since I have an 8ba in my '39 p/u. He was happy and I don't have to trip over it in the shop. All is good.

I’ve got one missing the rear piece
The cost of shipping would be more than it is worth from NS
I could probably ship it from stateside next time I go to NH if somebody wanted it.
