Two horn rod questions

This regarding a '29 Tudor. Is there room to get the horn rod in and out with the column in the car? Second question: The directions for installing the horn wire in the rod say not to get the end too hot when soldering so as not to melt the insulator. After great care and diligence...I melted the insulator. Not bad, just a little mushroomed. There is, however, a 1/16 inch play of the wire within the rod due to the plastic insulator being that much shorter from previously mentioned mushroom re-shape. The top insulator will be held solid with the horn button hardware, but the bottom may be an issue. Any ideas aside from buying another kit?

I'm sure you will have to lower the steering to R&R the horn rod. I tried to slip it out on my 31 Town Sedan and put a slight bend in the horn rod. I'll have to straighten the rod and lower the column when it goes back in.

I was able to flex the rod out of my 29 Murray and replace it the same way but next time I will loosen the steering box mounting bolts and drop the column off the fuel tank. Much better on the rod and its not that much work. Not sure on a Tudor.

Drop the steering column. Regarding your insulator, get one of the small gaskets from a carburetor kit, cut it into a small "C" so you can slip it over the wire on one side of your "shortened" insulator, and place a drop of RTV in the cut to seal it in place. Perhaps just teasing some RTV in the gap and letting it solidify will do the trick even easier.

Pat: I am in Placerville. I removed my 29 7 tooth p/u steering column and I need to replace the wire. The kit that I bought, the lower plastic that I think slides into the tube does not fit. The inside of my tube is about 190 thousands. I measured another 2 tooth steering column and that rod measured out to be the same. Is this plastic lower piece supposed to slide inside the lower tube and then the brass inside the plastic? Call me please: Ken 530-295-1001 (I grew up in Los Gatos am familiar with Santa Cruz)
