Turn Signal Buzzer?

I would like to hook up a buzzer to my signal lights to let me know when they are on. I have a radio shack buzzer and I am wondering what is the best way to hook it up? Thanks

They make turn signal blinker capsules (the little silver cylindrical thingy with the electrical prongs on one end) that have a buzzer in them! It buzzes with each blink of the lights. Sorry, I can't recall what 'A' supplier I got it from - it may have even been a local auto parts store. Check around and call the 'A' suppliers. You'll find it.

I personally ended up not liking the buzzer type so much because the buzzer was so loud! I had to wrap a piece of duct tape around it to muffle it. ALSO - the buzzer drew enough current that when the engine was at a low idle, the signal lights wouldn't blink - not enough juice to drive the bloomin' buzzer!. they just stayed on. AND, at higher engine RPM's, the headlights dimmed up and down when the turn signals were blinking! Not cool. It may have been a "weak" or mis-adjusted generator but I just yanked the module and went to an ordinary silent type. No problems now - works great.

Without the "reminder buzzer", I just had to discipline myself to turn the signals OFF after making my turn. But I still ain't perfect. I don't know what's more embarrasing - people looking at me at stop lights because of the funny, loud blinker-buzzer - OR, now, people pulling beside me to tell me I left my turn signal on.

I mounted my Radio Shack buzzer on the left inside cowl panel with small round head wood screws. I extended the supplied wires, one to the "P" terminal of the flasher and the other (red) to a ground screw at the terminal box inside the firewall.

Barry - I tried that and the buzzer goes on even if the signals are not working. Maybe I should try a different flasher module. Do you know which one you have?

i had one also and forget it when the windows are open. you can hear anything! You better off getting a flashing light

That happened to me when I first hooked it up so I moved the wire to the "P" terminal. That's the one that tells the pilot light to go on. My setup is separate from the lighting circuit as I have extra signal lights mounted if that makes any difference. The flasher is a heavy duty 6v. #535.

We just put two sets in that cancel automatically after a period of time. !5 seconds after the brake is released. pretty cool method,

I connected the buzzer so that it buzzez continuously as long as the turn signals are ON. I liked that better than the pulsating buzz as the lights blinkted.

Ken - How did you do that?

we installed the system from Turnsignal.com. it is a small brain box that works independent of everything, power or no power and works on all LED lights, headlights, cowl lights and anything else you use, 12 or 6 volt and also works with the 3rd brakelighter which is really nice,
Cost 195.00 shipped with the wire kit:D

WOW !
$195 !
You can purchase an imitation Signal Stat 800 turn signal system for $18 plus the flasher.
Gene Bunce sells flashers with the built in LOUD beeper for maybe $25 for a 6 volt system.

I had a beeper in my sedan once. I hated it, What an irritating noise. So I found an old 6 Volt flasher that ticks, and wired it behind the dash right in front of the driver. It rests on the dash, which acts as an amplifier to some extent. Now all I hear is the pleasant old time tick..tick..tick of the flasher. I can't hear it at speeds over 30, but that why I have a light too.

As a follow-up to my original post, here is how I eventually hooked up my turn signal buzzer (complements of bob1942 from www.ahooga.com).

I bought the piezo buzzer and diodes (1A) from radio shack ("The Source" in Canada.) Note that the buzzer also acts like a diode so you have to make sure it is hooked up the right way to work.

I mounted the buzzer on top of my turn signal switch unit which is strapped to the steering column.

I liked the idea of the buzzer not working when the brakes were on (eg. sitting at an intersection). This can normally be accomplished by hooking the ground lead on the buzzer to the brake light wire/switch. When the brake light is not energized there is normally a path to ground through the lights. When the brake light is energized there is no current flow through the buzzer (ie. power on both sides).

In my case, hooking the other side of the buzzer to the brake light wire (switch) did not work well likely due to the fact that I have LED brake lights. To solve this problem I used a 6v relay and used the normally closed relay contacts to ground the buzzer. When the brake lights are energized it energizes the relay and opens the relay contacts so the buzzer is no longer grounded (opens the ground circuit so the buzzer does not buzz).

Works well so far as it reminds me to cancel the signal lights when I turn a corner or change lanes.
