Tudor roof tack strip insert

I'm in the process of removing the original tack strip and roof wood to redo the insert on my 32 Tudor, my question is after the roof material is tacked down, and the tack strip is tacked on, was there any thing that was put into the slot where the tacks go?? My father did his 5w back in the 60's and filled the grove with putty and then painted it, but it seems like there should be something that would go there to cover the tack heads. note this is an original tack strip not the aluminum track stuff that is sold now to replace it.

There is a rubber strip that wedges into that trim piece and it is availabe from most of the peddlers.

Hello It has been many years . In the early 60's I replaced the roof insert on my 32 tudor sedan. It had the original insert covered completely with hand applied roofing tar. I used a utility knife and cut the insert at the inner edge of the tacking strip. Once that was removed there was cotton padding and chicken wire, all henry ford original as this car had the original headliner still in it. Now for the tacking strip. I used a carpet tack removing tool to pry up the tacking strip. the tar had preserved it very well. After removing the tar , there was a sort of paper rope about 5/16 diaameter that was covered with what looked like a thin strip of top material or perhaps it was what Ford called proxylin coated cloth. Sort of similar to the fender welting. I used some rubber vacuum tubing when the new top was on and the steel tack strip was reinstalled to cover the new nails. used a rubber hammer to pound it into place. looked perfect and never leaked a drop.I suppose the modern strip now available might be a great alternative, but this was what I used 50 years ago. This was on my first 32. Have had more than 20 of these 32's since then. Ah memories. Pete the true blue 32 man
