Tudor rear seat backrest

I'm very new at upholstery. Ive removed all of the old upholstery and am ready to start reupholstering. The back rest of the rear seat does not have a wood base. The old upholstery was simply hog ringed to the springs. ID this correct or is there supposed to be a wood frame. The seat seemed to fit just fine the way it was but I'd like to do it right. It's a 1930 if that matters.

Thanks for any advice you can give.
