Tube Shocks for a 1947 Ford

I am swapping out a Columbia rear end in my 1947 Ford for another Columbia from a 1948 Ford (this is another complete story). It has the lower brackets for use with tube shocks and I was wondering if anybody had a feel for what I would need to do for an upper shock mount and it's location so I could convert to tube shocks.
Thanks
Jeff

I put tube shocks on my 48 Ford. I was lucky to find NOS lower brackets. My cross member is boxed in and I had a machine show make two studs. I used the holes that were already drilled in cross member. I could e-mail some pictures if that would help. Good Luck

Not to steal the thread, but l'm putting tubes on a '38 and pictures on here would be nice. Also the part numbers of the shocks you used, please sir.

Thanks Cecil. You used '48 style mounts on the axle end? Where did you source the upper mounts?

Napa should have listings for various upper studs that can be adapted. Be careful the shocks you select have enough stroke. If to short the shocks will not extend enough and tear the mounts off. The top mounts are easy, it's the bottom ones that are hard to find or make. G.M.

Thanks for all the advice and links. As soon as the rains stops (Washington state) I will move things around and start the rear end swap.

Steve: Rather than emailing the pictures, I (and a lot of others) would appreciate it if you could post them here!! Thanx!

Yes, post some pictures! I went to NAPA and they are telling me they only sell Gas shocks. Will those work with an early suspension?

i put tube type shocks on my 46 napa had them in another place. i think the parts numbers listed here are the same for my car. fit well and work fine.

My VERY limited experience with gas filled shocks is that they act like additional springs. I'm putting a '48 rear into a '32, leaving out a couple of leaves from the spring. Hopefully, using gas shocks will kind of balance things out.

PS: Has anyone tried poking a hole into a gas filled shock to let the gas out and then plugging the hole???

I have gas shocks in the rear of my '47 and they're STIFF. They are a performance shock (kyb gas adjust), so maybe a softer gas shock would work better (like a monroe matic or gas matic, gabriel classic).

I purchased a pair of the Rear Upper Tube Shock mounts fron Dennis Carpenter (Part No. 51A-18152-B) in January for $15.00.
