Tube Failure

I have been having trouble with inner tubes. Recently I had my second child, so my 1931 CCPU has been sitting for most of this spring. In the past month I drove maybe 800 yard and have had 3 total failures of the inner tubes. I installed new tires and tubes last spring. Today I pulled it out of the garage for the afternoon while I worked in the garage. In this 6 hour period the latest tube failed. Is anyone else having this problem?

New ones are crap. I replaced the tubes when I replaced the 20 year old tires, what a mistake!!! I had a blow out after a few short miles in the seam of the tube.

What do you mean by failure?

Total Failure
First failure was a .5 inch slit, that I tried to fix (I knew it would most likely fail) Second was a total failure as you can see.

Where did you buy the tubes? I have had good luck with Coker but they are probably ten years old .

I have had several problems with the new tubes. They are nothing but pure junk. I know a lady who had 2 flats within 30 yards of each other while she was pregnant....On HWY 30 in Arlington, in an area where there is not a very big shoulder...at 5:00 in the morning. I'll just stick with the ones that work.

I replaced my tubes with the ones Berts sell. My old ones had about 500 miles on them. The difference was noticeable!

These failures are very unfortunate. As with reply #6, it would be helpful to know where these inner tubes were purchased. I am getting ready to replace my 36+ year old tires and based on this thread, will - if at all possible - retain the inner tubes that have (knock wood) never experienced a failure during that time.

Rubber stems

I went to the supplier. He gave me two new ones no questions asked. Third just failed today, so I have not been back. Only issue is they are the same brand. I now have questionable confidence in all the tubes. Advice?

I've heard this before. I've got 4 tires (16") on order but no tubes. Doe's anyone have a recommendation who makes or stocks decent tubes nowadays?
Thanks, Pete

i have Put 10,000 miles on mine easy this year and have had no failures and there brand new tubes from PV antique maybe when your installing them a peace of the tube is getting caught between the rim and tire?? oh ya there rubber stemmed ones too.

Vermin's Firestone 6.00 x 16 tires & tubes are 25 years old & driven just a few miles. Got all new tubes to install from Mac's in N.Y. (Made in China)
What's your thoughts??? Bill W.

Anybody have a set of the old "red rubber" tubes set back that they aren't using? I cut all of Dad's up back in the 60's making sling shots.

All five of my "new" installed last year rubber stem tubes on an undriven project Model A lost about 20 lbs of air pressure each just sitting in about six months this winter.

The failed tubes in the pic look stretched in the rim area ---was talc used so the tubes could move?? Was the air let out after the bead was seated and thenm reinflated??some of the new tubes I have been given to use have been very sticky ---that combined with the low cost manufacturing sourcees inconsistant quality can lead to a thin area of the tube being stretched into the drop center of the rim while the rest of the tube is stuck to the inside of the tire ---add in a little rim pitting and roughness to add to the stress

I have to change my 40 year old tires, but I am planning on re-using my 40 year old tubes

if your old tubes have cracks around the valve stems put in metal stems

just had the same problem new usa tube and tires failed in about 20 miles the tube looked like you cut it with a knife completely tore in half?

How about 19" motorcycle tubes? I know they will work with 19" or 21" Model A wheels. I used some once on a trip where there were no Model A stores. They have short stems but you can cut them off and install original metal stems, or the repos from A&L.

I haven't tried this but will when I get to the point of putting tires on. Seems like a good idea. Rub a nylon stocking around the inside rim to catch any small burrs that might cause an abrasion on the tube.

Humble Opinion:

See nothing wrong with being a bit leary of a foreign Country that has a past reputation for selling other countries poisoned dog food, poisoned sheetrock, poison lead paint on toys, etc., etc.

Had a "new" modern, foreign made split tire replaced recently after driving about 100 miles -- had no idea I had a foreign made tire with a U.S. brand name -- if a foreign Government has no control measures to prevent harm to life with poison, why would they be any different with control measures to prevent harm to life with tires & tubes.

Defective tires & tubes are most life threatening on today's highways -- buying cheap used to be a sign of frugality -- but we need to change our thinking especially when it involves "life" safety.
