So if I have an original, and want to put a new wire in it...how? What wire to use? Where to get it? Any other tips?

I'd sell the thing, but I always feel like someone always wants to cheat me. I have a pretty one (orig with the correct key) but the guy I got it from put the wrong wire in the thing, and it is now touching in there....which means the engine died....

You can contact Dick Crabtree to rebuild it, very good and reasonable. His number is (605) 487-7229

Most rebuilders don't like to restore a repro. My reproduction was made in Spain. It's a relatively faithful reproduction of the 1930/31 type units. The keys and no name on them are the easy way to tell a reproduction. All of the originals units I have seen have the Electrolock name on them somewhere. The 28/29 types are different than the 30/31 types even though they are similar.

The reproductions come apart just like the 30/31 types and the rear cap has to be carefully removed to desolder the wire at the switch mechanism. After it is disconnected then the cable assembly can be removed from the head. Replacing the wire can be tricky due to the way it attaches at the distributor end. The cable assemblies are available that mi mic the original and may be good for a complete replacement. The 28/29 cable assemblies are a bit shorter than the 30/31 assemblies.
