I have the deck lid latch and handle off of my '30 coupe trunk but it is in the locked position and I have no key. wondering how to seperate, do I need to have a key made or? Thanks for any advice.
no, if it is out of the rubble lid there should a nut on the end of the shaft, just remove the nut end the handle should come right off. if it is an early 30 with the non removable lock cylinder there should be a key number stamped on the shaft.
Under "Search" above, a search for a phone number and a call to Mr. Crabtree, Model A locksmith, will prove most beneficial just in case you want keys or whatever.
If you are mechanically inclined here are the tid bits I have learned.
If it is a true 1930 then the cylinder is kept in place with a clip on the barrel stainless cover.
If the cylinder is loose then you can pick the lock open or close. If the cylinder is swollen pot metal then you have other issues. Look online on how to lock pick.
As pointed out some will have the key number stamped on the side. If that is the case and the cylinder is loose then you have have a locksmith cut the key by code.
If you want to take the lock cylinder out, there are two types of cylinders. One that has a slot on the face going the full diameter. The other has the side opposite the tumblers blocked. The first can can have the cylinder pulled from the front by pushing a wire down the hole, but I think you have to first pick the lock and turn it to the right position. Been a while since I did it once.
There is the locking slider. That is the square steel piece that slides across when you turn the key. That will prevent you from getting the stainless barrel cover off if you can not unlock the cylinder. The piece is simple to make as it is just a square piece of steel with an notch in it. I did cut one off to get a lock apart and make a new one to get the handle working.
Really they are pretty easy stuff to fix if you want to play.
