Here's the test for all you guru's out there, can anyone tell me how the key hole cover comes off? I can tell you that it's a brass pin, and looks like mushroom button on the outside of the cover looks as if it goes inside the brass tube stem that feeds thru the back of the cover, and that on the backside of the stem is a collar to hold the spring in place.

My spring was warn out and cover just hangs, got spring off but the pin is bent and wanted to try and straighten it, therefore if someone know or if can come apart without destroying it.

If I remember correctly the small collar holds the spring in place. Remove the collar and the whole thing comes apart. Try Dick Spadaro for a repair kit.

32phil, I appreciate the response, as I did realize that the small collar moves and that it holds small end of spring in place, or at least I should say my old spring was a triangle sphearical shape, in other words wide one end and spiralled around to a small end that went against the collar, wide end being set inside handle recess and narrow end against collar toward trunk. The only issue I could see with that is that the end that the collar would slip off of is belled out a bit, to hold on the collar wasn't sure in trying to squeaze it and smash it, or how I would get it belled out again because the whole stem is brass. I somewhat remedied in an old jar I had about 200 various type springs and found one that was shaped like the old one, I just slipped it over the pin that holds the cover on and took a small washer and cut a slot in it with a dremel, then slipped it around the stem above the spring just below the collar and squeazed it with a small pair of pointed vice grips, and wallah after 30+ years the hole is again covered and working quite nicely. I am still going to locate Dick Spadaro to inquire about the repair kit. Pete

Hay Cousin, that sounds like a nightmare, i hope you find out how to work out that bug, Google Dick Spadaro, he has a web site and i think he is a member on the Barn.
