Truing Brake Drums & Hubs

Exactly what does this mean & how necessary is it when installing new drums? See this referenced often but never any explanation, thanks

I believe new drums need to be turned in a brake drum lathe to make sure they are true ( round ) Then the new brake shoes are rounded to match the drums. In doing that the brake shoe makes total contact with the drum. A lot of times when new brake drums are mated to the hubs they get out of round.

The mating surface between the hub and the drum can be distorted when removing the old studs to facilitate removing the old drum. We chuck the hub in the lathe and clean up the hub mating surface before installing the new studs and the drum. Only takes a skim coat or just a few thousandths to true them up.
After the studs are swedged in place the hub is put back in the lathe to true up the drum. This assures that the drum runs true with the hub.
Others may do this differently but this proceedure has worked pretty well for us.
