I don't know how this works or if its possible as I'm from the uk, but is their any way to find out how many 1938 ford panel trucks are registered in America ? Thanks

May be pretty hard to find out. Registration is handled by each state. No cross reference that I know of.

If you are a V-8 Club member you might go through the roster to see how amny are owned by club members.

There is no National Registry for vehicles in the US, as pointed out, it is a state function to register vehicles.
The majority of states do not make a specific designation on the type, body style, of most old vehicles.. Generally, a '38 Ford commercial would just be a truck, i.e. trk ,pkup or fltbd on the model/body type portion of the legal doc's..
As pointed out, a EFV8 roster might shed some light on how many vehicles of a certain type belong to club members..

The US is not anything like the UK when it comes to registration of motor vehicles. You guys have the registration number transfer with the vehicle from owner to owner, but we in the US do not do this. Each transfer of ownership is assigned a new registration issue thus creating a new number. Also as others here have pointed out, each state is responsible for the registration of vehicles within their jurisdiction. Also, I am not certain how long archived records are saved in the database, particularly from the era before computer records.

I am curious as to why do you want this information? Perhaps we can tackle it from another angle...like you may be able to get an estimate by researching vintage auto clubs, or other such "organisations":), that would include the panel trucks.
