'48 and earlier Ford cars and '47 and earlier pickups are good examples of a floating axle. The bearings inside the hub ride on a hollow spindle that is part of the axle housing, so all of the weight is carried on the axle housing and not on the axle. The axle only transmits power and carries no weight.
