Would someone please enlighten me as to which came first, the ford o matic or the cruise o matic. And which is the better of the two. Thanks for any and all help. Jim
 
I'm no expert, but the Ford-O-Matic and Merc-O-Matic came out in '51. It was considered a 3 speed auto.
I believe the Cruis-O-Matic was based on the Ford-O-Matic, but came out in '58 ?

I would have to say a Cruis-O-Matic is probably a better trans than the Ford-O-Matic.

Cruise O Matic debuted in '59 was basically a modified valve body that made the Ford O Matic shift differently(starts off in 1st gear if so selected). They introduced the aluminum case 2 speed as Ford O Matic in that year. The name switch confuses a lot of people. That transmission was used mostly in small cars through '64 and then dropped.
