transmission

larryf: What are you trying to accomplish?? Mitchell makes a synchro ******, direct replacement for the original.

Why the syncro trans? Nothing wrong with a PROPERLY rebuilt A trans,or is it because you have not learned to double clutch the A trans?Part of the A experience is the sound of the straight cut gears. If you must have the syncro trans, you could use the B oil pan, with a mod at rear to mate up with the smaller rear main of the A. you also need the upper B F-W hsg.You can use the 32 B trans so that you do not need an adapter for the V-8 trans case. You will have to fabricate a R-rod ball mount & pedal mounts.I think rear mounts for engine will require work as well. My advice is to keep the car as original as possible. By the way,the 39-48 all helical cut gears can be shoe horned into the early case with a minor mod to the syncro teeth on the main drive gear.

The easiest way is to use a 32-39 V8 trans buying the kit from Cling's. The B trans can be used but is much more complicated. e-mail dcmc1202@cox.net If you drive a lot, you'll be much happier with the V8 trans as opposed to the Model A.

The main thing you need to look at, which is solved by the kits referenced, is the fact that in the Model A the brake pedal , the clutch pedal and the front wish bone all mount directly to the Model A transmission. This is not the case for 1932 and later. If it was me, I would leave the Model A transmission.

If its not jumping out of gear, I replace all of the bearings and shafts. The model A transmission is simple and easy to rebuild. A bearing and shaft overhaul will probably last a lifetime. The gears are very durable. Worn out bearings are usually the death of the model A transmission.
