If they are both side shifts, yes. I believe transmissions were the same for Ford/Mercury during these years.

Fairly sure that the 41 Ford rear bearing retainer is different from the 40 Mercury…..the difference between the spacing between the two bolt holes in the support ears. The Ford still has the 10” spacing and the Merc has the 8” spacing. The good news is that the two rear retainers are interchangeable. Just unbolt the U - Joint and then remove the 6 bolts holding the retainer to the gearbox. Tap the retainer off. If you’re not doing a rebuild on the replacement transmission you must be careful to prevent the trans mainshaft and ball bearing from walking out the back of the unit. You’ll need to replace the gasket at the retainer and seal the threads on the six bolts.

Thanks for adding that. I should have been more clear in my answer. I was just thinking of the physical case and gears. Kind of like using a '39 trans in a '32. Good news is Ford gave us adult Legos and a lot of the parts mix and match for multiple applications.
