Transmission stuck (?) in high.........

Timothy,

Can we assume that your 09 is not one of the very early 2 lever cars?

The high speed is achieved through a multiple disc, steel on steel clutch. When the hand lever is full forward & the left pedal all the way out the clutch is engaged. Check to see that something has not come apart in the linkage that disengages the clutch when the lever is half way back. When you move the lever to vertical the pedal should drop half way. If it is not this, the problem could be in the clutch - not so easy to fix.

If you apply the hand brake will it stop the wheels while jacked up & running once the oil has warmed a bit? A cold T with 30 weight oil in it will usually give the impression it wants to run over you while you start it. It is wise to leave the car parked with the lever full forward to squeeze the oil out of the clutch & thus make it easier to start the next time.

As you mentioned there is quite a list of possibilities but a little information can help track doewn the problem.

I've attached two pages that describe how to adjust the transmission to obtain a free neutral.

Timothy,

Perhaps you are correct. I acquired my first T when I was in grade school 50 years ago & have never been without some since, currently I think I have 7, most of them driven occasionally. I always leave the lever forward & I have hardley ever had one run away. I have never had one stick in gear. Remember the clutch is covered in oil & sealed away from the atmosphere fairly well. Engaged, the pressure is somewhat off the spring as well.

I would guess your clutch problem is not with the discs sticking but an adjustment or something out of place particularly since it went away abruptly.

No matter how you do it, a block in front of a wheel is a good idea on a cold car.

We will be looking for a post around Thanksgiving, 2060 to see if your method is as successful - OK?

Tim, Probably an oil chg. and some steady drivein will help as much as anything. Probably has varnished up a little inside an just needs cleaned up. Monte

I added some slip agent that I purchased in NAPA . Had a draging clutch problem It worked. I'll try to get the name off the can when I go home.
