Transmission stuck in gear

I reinstalled the transmission and motor in my '31 Tudor and cannot get the trans into neutral. Have removed the shifter and attempted to move the gears by hand without success. Any suggestions?

If you run a search by typing in 'Transmission Stuck in Gear' you'll see a thread posted on 09-09-2012 by Cape Codder that has multiple suggestions of how to free up the transmission.

Hope it gets you back on the road!

Without reading what heneste has said, usually you can move the gears if you depress the clutch and rock the output shaft back & forth.

If the rear end is connected then I'd jack up one wheel and push in the clutch. Now you should be able to slide the gears to neutral.

theguys are right, the pressure has to be taken off the trans gears before you will be able to move them, jack up one rear wheel and push clutch down, now they should be free enough to move, the shifter rails need to be in a straight line across from each other, thats nuetral, do what is necessary to get them in line, next find out why they got out od sequence in the first place, usual cause is worn shifter ball, a worn ball lets the shifter slip out of the rail with out moving it, thus in two gears, find and fix the problem that let the trans get stuck, thats a problem that will not go away till its fixed

Thanks for all the input. I jacked up the ear wheel and got the gears to move. Now on to the next problem.....

Thanks again to everyone who responded.
