Transmission Shifting

Car has been sitting in storage for 5 years. Transmission is in neutral. Got engine running, cannot shift into any gear! Any help is appreciated.

If the shift lever won’t move running or not in any direction it’s time to take out the floorboards and remove the shifter from the transmission to look inside.
try and move gears by hand—- clamp shifter in vice or screw it to something tend see if the lever moves the forks.
Is there a chance it got wet inside and the gears and/ or the shifter rails rusted due to condensation
A detent spring could have broken and be jamming it up
If you get grinding noises when trying to put it in gear the clutch could be stuck.

There are thread here about breaking a stuck clutch free (the plate becomes stuck to the flywheel after a while without use). If, once you do those things, you still cannot get the %^ into gear, it's time to look inside. Take off the top and investigate as has been suggested above.

If you can't shift with the engine not running it's the gearbox [aka as "transmission" your side of pond!] at fault. follow post #4.
If you can't shift with engine running, but you CAN with the engine not running then it's likely a frozen clutch. follow post #7

So I checked then drained and replaced ****** fluid. Took top off the ****** and I am lost as for the next step. Kurt, you said to clamp it in a vice to see if the forks are moving. Any other things I should be looking for? Very frustrating.
Thank you everyone for all the help.

After you take the top off of the transmission, make sure the shift lever ball is in each shift fork as in the photo, this is the neutral position. Make sure the shift lever ball didn't go past one of the forks.
It would be a good time to make sure the shift lever ball is round and not worn out.

What you are looking for is anything that would inhibit the transmission lever from moving in all the gear positions 1,2,3,& reverse. In the vise or someone holding things steady you can check the tower for trouble.
