Transmission Removal 1929 CCPU

Today, finished pulling all the bolts needed to pull the transmission from my 1929 closed cab pickup. Decided to pull the rear end out and drop the transmission that way (seemed easier than pulling the engine). Got the transmission backed out of the clutch splines, but transmission didn't have enough clearance to drop straight down.

The brake cross-shaft won't allow the u-joint housing to move back far enough to drop straight down. If I pull the front brake clevis pins, will the shaft rotate enough to give me the clearance I need? Or, would removing the universal joint be the way to go? Not much help in Les Andrews Mechanics Handbook, but looking for advice from someone that has endured the joy of dropping the transmission from a 1929. Thanks,
I wait with greasy hands!

Seems like I had to loosten the motor mount bolts (actually remove 2 of the rear ones) and raise the front of the engine slightly to get a better angle.

Ive never had to loosen motor mounts or change angle of engine to remove trans.Just remove the U-J and you will have enough clearance to remove trans.Use a 9/16" socket & extension to get at bolt that holds the U-J to main shaft. It helps to put trans in 2-gears at once to keep main shaft from turning. When installing U-J,make sure lug on thick washer fits between splines on main shaft.Dont let weight of trans hang on clutch disc or it might bend disc hub.

Thanks for the advice from everyone. This morning will remove the U-J and see if we can't clear the brake cross-shaft. I've been very careful to keep the trans supported on a floor jack to keep the weight off the front shaft.

After we get the trans out, changing the clutch should be a breeze!

Removing the U-J was the way to go! Got the trans out without too much trouble. Didn't need to mess with the brake cross-shaft. Thanks for all the great advice. Now, I've got to get busy and clean 80 years of grease out of the bell housing. Oh, joy!
